The theory component of the program will be delivered online asynchronously (without formal lectures) with an IEMLT program facilitator hosting regularly scheduled meetings online for student check-ins and to ensure student progress. Scheduled laboratory sessions will be held in person at the Anderson College North York campus and students are required to attend these for program completion.

Asynchronous learning does not occur in the same place or at the same time. Instructors and students do not need to be available at any time or day. Resources will be available on the learning management system Brightspace (D2L), usually with instructions to complete weekly modules. You are free to work through the semester modules at your own speed, however they must be completed by the end date provided by the program.

OR

Show proof of graduation from a program assessed as equivalent to a Canadian MLT program. This assessment must be made via the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process. http://csmls.org/Certification/Prior-Learning-Assessment/Types-of-PLA.aspx

OR

Graduate from a baccalaureate degree program, approved by CMLTO’s Registration Committee, from a Canadian university, whose major course content, both lecture and practical, is relevant to medical laboratory technology.

AND

Show proof of a certificate or statement of passing grade (successful completion) of the certification examination offered by the CSMLS, in the specialty/specialties in which registration is being sought.

AND

All applicants for registration with the CMLTO must meet all registration requirements including the ability to provide objective evidence of reasonable fluency in English and/or French.

The overall program goals and objectives are aligned with Sonography Canada’s National Competency Profile Version 6.0.

Sonography is a regulated profession in Ontario under the guidance of the CMRITO – College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (www.cmrito.org).

Upon successful completion of this program students will also be eligible to challenge the American Registry Exam for the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)

Apply to the CSMLS for a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

PLA: English Fluency Test

PLA: Evaluation of Academic/Education Qualifications

PLA: CSMLS Evaluation of Past Training and Experience

The CSMLS PLA determines whether your theoretical and practical education and your work experience are equivalent to that obtained in Canada and confirms your fluency in English or French in order to begin the PLA process and write the CSMLS examination.

When the CSMLS has completed the evaluation, they will send you a PLA report. The professional regulating body, Canadian Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) only accepts PLA reports issued by CSMLS. When you pass the CSMLS examination, you are eligible to apply to the CMLTO for a practicing certificate of registration.

CSMLS examinations are offered in February, June, and October each year. You must apply for the examination three months ahead of time. The CSMLS examination is not offered outside of Canada.

To register in the Practicing class of registration, an applicant must:

CMLTO language fluency requirements are met when guarantor-signed evidence that the applicant meets one of the following criteria is provided to the CMLTO with an application for registration:

Successful completion of a medical laboratory science program that was accredited by the Health Standards Organization (HSO) (or its predecessor, the Canadian Medical Association conjoint accreditation services) at the time
the applicant completed their medical laboratory science program; or
Achievement of the minimum scores in one of the Registration Committee (RC) approved language fluency tests;

AND

Show proof of active engagement (use of knowledge, skills and judgment as a medical laboratory technologist) in medical laboratory technology in the three years preceding the application.

OR

Show proof of successful completion of a CMLTO-approved
refresher course in the three years preceding the application. For more detailed information about refresher courses, visit the CMLTO website at http://www.cmlto.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id= 1279&Itemid=680.

AND

Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada or have authorization under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) to practice medical laboratory technology.

Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) qualifications from another country with a current (not expired) completed CSMLS Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

Recent work experience as an MLT in the country where credentialed or recent MLT graduate (attach resume)

Be a permanent resident/landed immigrant or have refugee status or Canadian citizenship

Successful completion of Anderson College’s foundation MLT knowledge test (with a passing grade of 60%)

Must attend an Anderson College IEMLT Bridging Program virtual open house

Considered an asset to be working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician or phlebotomist in a Canadian medical laboratory environment

An up-to-date Anderson College immunization record including tetanus and diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B (incl. Hep B titer within the last 24 months), TB skin test, influenza and Covid-19.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, with senior level College (C) University (U) level courses:

English
Mathematics
Minimum one senior science; Chemistry or Biology or Physics (Biology is strongly recommended)

Post-secondary level courses may be used to satisfy subject prerequisites. Applicants with post-secondary education must provide official transcripts for all secondary and post-secondary institutions attended

Students completing the English requirement at a high school in a country other than Canada and who have English as a second language, must complete an acceptable English Assessment TOEFL (Graduate Certificate: 580 for the paper-based test or 237 for the computer-based test, or 88+ minimums for the Internet-based test.) or equivalent testing

Foreign trained individuals must have their credentials assessed by WES or ICES for equivalency

Profession Specific Aptitude Test

Applicants will be assessed on their capacity to understand and follow directions. The assessment may include: questions related to reading comprehension, math, science, career awareness, and, reasoning-type questions, or scenarios related to interpersonal interactions.

CASPer Test
All applicants must complete the CASPer Test. Please continue to check the CASPer website for upcoming test dates. CASPer test results are valid for the entire school year in which the test was completed (October to August). You only need to take CASPer once during this time. Note: Last minute bookings are not recommended, register at least three days prior to your preferred test date. There is a fee associated with testing.

Please note that possession of the prerequisite course requirements does not guarantee admission. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of places available in the program, the College reserves the right to select from among those applicants. All qualified students will be given equal consideration.

Anderson College offers reserved seats for Indigenous, rural and northern Ontario students. Only applicants who self-identify as First Nation, Métis, or Inuit or those with a home address (living) in rural and northern Ontario regions will be eligible for these seats. The same selection process will apply to the above noted applicants. If the seats are not filled by a specified date, they will be offered to waitlisted applicants.

Successful candidates will be informed of the allocation of their practicum placement by the program. There is no guarantee that students will be placed at their desired practicum location. Special considerations of personal circumstances will not be given in regard to assigning practicum placements. Students will be responsible for fees associated with practicum such as entrance requirements, relocation and travel costs.

In compliance with the practical agreements with our clinical partners, successful candidates will be requested to provide proof of the following:

Security clearance – Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check
N95 respiratory mask fitting
An up-to-date immunization record including tetanus and diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B (incl. Hep B titer within the last 24 months), TB skin test, influenza and Covid-19
Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level BLS.

The theory component of the program will be delivered online with both synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities. Laboratory sessions will be held in person and will require students to attend all laboratory sessions at the campus.

Asynchronous learning does not occur in the same place or at the same time. Instructors and students do not need to be available at any time or day. Resources will be available on the learning management system Brightspace, usually with instructions to complete weekly modules.

Synchronous online learning occurs at the same time. The teacher and students will meet online, on Brightspace to collaborate, and will interact with each other in real time. Students should plan to be available at the scheduled class times.

Hybrid Program Delivery

Students have the chance to learn online at their own pace and also attend some online meetings with the program facilitator.

Upon being accepted to the program, the student must attend a virtual orientation to the IEMLT Bridging Program.

*This program does not require approval under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.
